About the Desert Park

Alice Springs Desert Park is located 7km from Alice Springs town centre, easily reachable by car or bike. It’s a great day trip – surrounded by the stunning MacDonnell Ranges, the Park is directly accessible from the Larapinta bike track. The Park is an environmental education facility which contributes to the conservation of animals and plants representative of the Australian desert environment.

There are three main walk-through desert habitat areas which can be accesses through a 1.5km trail:

  • The Desert Rivers habitat where you can walk through dry river beds, areas that have been flooded, past swamps and water holes. Demonstrations here also show how the aboriginal people use this habitat to harvest food and medicine.
  • The Sand Country habitat is a recreation of the sandy desert including clay, gypsum and salt pans.
  • The Woodland habitat includes enclosures for kangaroos and emus. You’ll be able to walk among the kangaroos in their exhibit area – isn’t that great?

Adventurous types can explore the dark and secret world of the Nocturnal House, home to over 30 rare and endangered species and witness free-flying birds demonstrating their survival skills as they inspire and educate you at the Nature Theatre show.
