About West MacDonnell National Park

Known as Tjoritja by the Traditional Owners, the East and West MacDonnell Ranges stretch out for hundreds of kilometers on both sides of Alice Springs. The range is a 644 km long series of mountains located in the centre of Australia, parallel ridges running to the east and west of Alice Springs. During the day, the sunlight turns the scenery into a photographic masterpiece and at night the Milky Way is shinier than ever. The West MacDonnell National Park was established in 1984 to protect the numerous parks and reserves of the range, including internal residents inside the range.

To the east of Alice Springs you can find numerous sites important to the local Arrernte people, many of which contain examples of Aboriginal rock art. To the west is the Larapinta Trail a long distance bush walking trail of 223 km along the backbone of the range. Stunning scenery, scenic gorges, waterholes and gaps, all within a couple of hours’ drive from Alice Springs.
